Security firm Peckshield announced that the unknown attacker returned about 90% of the stolen funds to the project. The multi-sig wallet controlled by Cream Finance received 5,152.6 ETH worth $17.6 million from the hacker's address. It is still unclear why the hacker decided to return the funds.The remaining 606 ETH, which the hacker did not return, were sent to another address that the hacker likely controls. A few hours ago, the address interacted with TornadoCash, a popular mixer on Ethereum used to hide transactions. 606 ETH is worth about $2 million at current prices.
What happened to Cream Finance?
On August 30, a hacker attacked the AMP token market listed on the DeFi protocol. The attacker exploited a re-entrancy bug that allowed multiple high-value flash loans. This allowed the hacker to move funds out of the contract.In a postmortem report, the team at Cream Finance stated that the incident resulted in a loss of 2,804.96 ETH and 462,079,976 AMP tokens, which were worth $34 million at the time. Shortly after the attack, the hacker traded the stolen AMP tokens, leaving 5,758 ETH in the wallet.
Since the hacker decided to return the funds, many people see similarities between this attack and the recent attack on Poly Network. The incident became the biggest crypto heist of all time after a hacker stole $611 million before returning the funds, but the difference between the attacks is that the hacker from Cream Finance decided to keep some stolen funds.
