Crypto exchange Bitstamp announced on Monday that CEO Julian Sawyer has stepped down and that former CCO and Europe CEO JB Graftieaux has been appointed as the company’s new CEO.
Bitstamp appoints JB Graftieaux as CEO
Sawyer, who had held the position for 18 months, “decided to pursue other opportunities,” Bitstamp said on Monday. Graftieaux, who will take over as CEO, was Bitstamp’s CCO from November 2014 to February 2016. He also worked at PayPal from 2009 to 2014 and eBay from 2016 to 2021.
“As the longest-running and highly trusted crypto exchange in the world serving millions of users, our strategic vision is to help build the financial ecosystem of tomorrow,” said Graftieaux.
Graftieaux rejoined Bitstamp as Europe CEO around a year ago. The crypto exchange credits him with gaining regulatory licenses for its EU-based operations and driving the firm’s expansion in Europe during the last year.
What is Bitstamp?
Bitstamp is a cryptocurrency exchange based in Luxembourg. that was created in 2011. It has a strong presence in Europe, but it is relatively tiny globally, controlling only about 2% of the market for spot trading between crypto and fiat, compared to market leader Coinbase’s 27%. The crypto exchange was acquired by private equity firm NXMH in 2018.
Last month, Bitstamp announced plans to expand in the United States by extending its “Bitstamp-as-a-Service” offering to domestic banks and fintech firms, allowing them to provide digital asset services to their customers.
