In the last weeks of 2019, we saw a sort of “crackdown” on cryptocurrency-related content and applications from both technology giants Apple and Google. These bans affected many crypto-influencers YouTube channels, as many of their videos were deleted. It also affected Coinbase which notified their users that they might have to remove the App browser functionality in order to comply with the App Store’s policy.
One of the affected Ethereum-based decentralised applications (DApps) was MetaMask, as their application was no longer available for download on the Google Play Store. The reason of its removal however, was incorrect. They allegedly banned MetaMask for providing mining services which is something MetaMask does not offer to any of its users.
As a result, Google had to revert the ban as tweeted by the MetaMask team: “Upon careful consideration, Google has permitted The MetaMask mobile app back on the Google Play (Android) store! Thanks to all the believers in an open web for speaking out in our support!”.
Considering the wave of regulations and bans that took place and were being implemented in late 2019, we do not know whether more content and applications will be banned. One thing is for certain, however, until regulations are properly set by countries, these types of events are likely to keep occurring every now and then.
